Free Words
Free Words
Free Words is both a book and a situational artwork.
It is a book which belongs to whoever finds it. Copies are placed on the shelves of bookstores and libraries creating a situation that infiltrates public and commercial space. The book is simply left on the shelf. It is clearly labeled as free. What someone does when they come across it is up to them.
Over 2500 copies of the book have been distributed in sites across the United States and around the world, primarily through a network of volunteer distributors.
The text of Free Words is a set of 13,000 words collected over ten years which has been placed in the public domain. “No Rights are Reserved,” declares the copyright page, making it available to anyone for any use whatsoever.
Free Words is a project for public space, but has also been at The Kitchen, psy.geo.conflux 2003, Swoon Union/Evolutionäre Zellen, at NGBK, Berlin, and Transmission, dérivée cneai = at Villa Arson, Nice.
