dispersed holdings
dispersed holdings is a listening and publication project, a collaboration between Sal Randolph and David Richardson.
Beginning in 2015 with events in artists studios, in 2016 dispersed holdings became a listening and publication space on the Bowery in New York, sited what had been Eva Hesse’s apartment in the 60s. Its goal was to create an environment for collective and interdisciplinary art-making and presentation that was both intimate and open. Generous hosting was an important element, and the space included a kitchen; at many events meals of chili, soup, or pancakes were served.
Events at dispersed included collaborative ambient sound and video performances, afternoons of reading books, a series of “reading residencies” in a small reading room created within the space, launches for experimental publications, dance performances, screenings, readings, workshops, and exhibitions. Topics taken up included the fusion of listening and making, the act of reading, political resistance, experimental publishing, and the inspiration offered by Eva Hesse.
While the dispersed space on the Bowery closed in 2018, current activities include the publication of the book Speed of Resin, launched at the NYABF at PS1 in 2019 and Reading Room, forthcoming in 2020.
In addition to many events in the dispersed space, dispersed holdings has taught workshops with DIA:Teens, Parsons, The Village Zendo, and RISD Global. As a band, dispersed holdings has performed in artists studios, at the dispersed space, and at Mengi in Reykjavik, Iceland. Sounds are available on the dispersed holdings cassette label and on the dispersed holdings Soundcloud.
dispersed holdings’ multimedia essay, “Listening Space,” is in MnemoscapeNumber 4 and a visual essay is in Another Tab of Chrome published by mozzarella.website.
As a publisher, dispersed holdings has exhibited at the Blond Art Book Fair at the Knockdown Center and at the New York Art Book Fair at PS1, where the launch of the book Speed of Resin was a featured spotlight publication. Speed of Resin is available from Printed Matter.
